with the release of ariana grande's 8th studio album, there is an obvious shift in her music. her voice seems clearer, but not just because of her previous vocal training for glinda. it's more present, more real. her pen seems more honest, every lyric tends to truly and rawly describe her differing feelings from beginning again in love and wanting to let go of the hard times in her life. to me it feels like the healed version of eternal sunshine in a way.
as she said in a promotional interview for the album, she pulled more from a place of anger. this is a very fitting way to describe the album's progression. but this anger isn't always just loud, like in tracks such as "like i do" and the title track "petal". ariana also expresses this anger quietly yet calculatedly. in songs like "freak", "never get over me", and "oh well", she takes this anger, redirects it from being aggressive to a way that allows her to take back her power gracefully.
there's also a sense of acceptance and moving on. especially in my favorite track so far, "nowhere, nobody". it's like grande is reflecting on who she was, not just in these past few years but throughout her whole career. like every moment built up to where she is right now and who she is in this album.
so far i have listened to the album once, but that doesn't mean it'll be the last. after the long wait for her most recent work, ariana grande has done it once again. but not just for her fans, but most importantly for herself.
make sure to take a listen to this album!!!
